french kiss

un grand basir a la langue francaise. french class was a blast today.

france is currently on strike (every service/industry) and monica reports that it is like a big tailgate party/parade in the streets.
appreciation goes out to her professor, who did not have to teach today--- but did anyway because it seems he thinks the whole thing is not necessarily constructive. it sounds to me like it's an excuse for time off and partying. i don't know the particulars of the unionized system in france, but for as often as this happens.... what is being reinforced?

il fait froid aujourd'hui, mais il est ensoleille. it is COLD here today, but it is sunny.

the air is clear and the mountains are showing off the latest snowfall. there is texture, definition and contrast r/t the distance from my eyes and the elevation. it is a task to keep focused on the road when this amazing scene is staring at me peripherally.

i had lunch with monica (dinner for her) via skype. i ate leftovers while she ate-- guess--- cheese! she was about to leave for a crepes party.

grace in small things ala yomama

just a very little bit of toasted sesame oil, mingled with the freshest lemon juice and the tiniest pinch of himalayan salt.... heaven when sprinkled over sesame seed tossed field greens.

going out to shovel snow and finding it is the light fluffy kind.

finding it very hard not to throw my arms around my chiropractor to hug him for relieving my longstanding knee pain. sufficing by telling him "you da man, consider yourself hugged!" and having him say goodbye with a very big "i'm appreciated" smile.

raspberry sorbet ice breakers gum

shifting into four-wheel drive when you find yourself in a blinding snow shower

finding the "beyond" area at the local BB&B.

cleaning out the entire interior of my car and putting back only what needs to be in there (bonus: finding a perfectly good bag of toasted nuts that i forgot about).

the promise of a newly inflated exercise ball

practicing zen-like patience with automated customer service menues

OMG 2009!

okay, yomama has been WAY remiss in recording any event-- or non-event-- since before holidays/travel/skiing/visiting otherwise preoccupied her consciousness.

there is never a good time to stop the world and write, so why not right now (or write now). i am starting this post-inaugural day later than my usual routine. yomama was celebrating the promise of renewed leadership for our country with a few hundred of her favorite obama-philes last night at the mercury.

the bohemian institution owns my heart. for 25 years the owner has honed her vision of a venue for the best of herself and the community. this includes local and organic foods. there was a recession-proof menu, several acts of solo jazz, blues and show tunes. free champagne--- many toasts at our table. then upstairs for dancing swing. special dances included the "snowball" which was great fun until you run out of new men to ask when the DJ yells out "snowball" and you have to wait a turn until the next "snowball" shout when you get picked again.

i truly felt sorry for those less fortunate that did not have, or failed to take advantage of such an opportunity to feel so alive-- and happy with hope for our country-- with fellow americans (and non) last night.

parting note: meanwhile, in france, monica said that she felt somewhat like a celebrity yesterday. when realizing she was american, those not using english as a first language wanted to speak with her in a celebratory flavor about obama. she also mentioned that shop owners were giving her free stuff from their stores in congratulations. i'll take that as a memorable lesson in world history.
